With these special classes, you can expand your knowledge, learn and explore a new world of metalsmithing styles, methods and traditions from our neighbors.
Engraving 1: Kebori
Come and take this chance to learn Japanese-style hairline engraving called kebori from jewelry artists, Wataru Yamazaki and Mariko Sumioka. In this class, you will be guided through the basics of chisel making and hammering to create patterns on metal.
Open to all levels
Damascene Inlay/ Nunome Zōgan
A metal inlay technique where you cut texture into the surface and press metal foil into it. The result is a flat, gentle surface, similar to fabric or paper pasted onto metal.
Prerequisite: Kebori
Engraving 2: Katakiri
Katakiri is a traditional Japanese engraving technique that creates bright cuts in metal. By controlling the angle and movement of the chisel, you can engrave expressive, rhythmic lines similar to brush strokes.
